On the 7th of September, Hamdi Ulukaya, the founder and CEO of Chobani, made a remarkable visit to the USAP Community School in Marondera. His presence brought immense joy and showcased the highest level of the human spirit.
During his visit, Hamdi shared his story from growing up as a Kurdish shepherd to becoming a refugee landing in the U.S. with no English or higher education to leading now both an impactful healthy food company as well as Tent, a nonprofit organization that encourages governments and companies to hire resettled refugees.
His heartfelt words of wisdom with our students and faculty, emphasized the importance of education being the foundation of progress. He talked about living with both anger and love, anger at injustice and love for humanity. The highlight of the day was his participation in traditional music, where he played the mbira and hosho alongside the USAP Community School Marimba and Mbira Clubs.
We also enjoyed a delicious traditional sadza meal together, fostering a sense of community and togetherness. Hamdi brought along Chobani swag for everyone in our campus community, including beautiful t-shirts, which delighted everyone. Hamdi had this to say about our school, ‘‘One school can change a life, a community, a country, and the world. USAP Community School is making that happen.’’
Hamdi came together with Kevin Burns, the COO of Chobani who also serves on the Education Matters Africa Foundation Board of Directors and is a long time friend and supporter of USAPCS. Chobani’s support has been instrumental in our school’s development, especially funding the construction of the Chobani Dining Hall, a dream that is now a reality. We are truly grateful for Chobani’s tremendous contributions to the life of our school and for believing in our potential, which have helped bring our vision and mission to life. Hamdi Ulukaya’s visit not only inspired us but reaffirmed the important role businesses and individuals have in giving back to the community.
