Zimbabwe is proud to announce the 120 young scientists who will participate in the 2023 Zimbabwe Science Fair from the 22nd to the 24th of February.
The panel of judges objectively decided on the 120 finalists who represent 100 projects, some working individually and others in pairs. The finalists were chosen from a total of 317 entries from 46 schools across Zimbabwe in all ten Provinces. Notably, the USAP Community School, a non-profit selective A level school specifically for high-achieving, low-income students from throughout Zimbabwe, boasts 25 of the 120 winners.
The young scientists propose projects based on various disciplines of science, technology and engineering to solve society’s most pressing problems. The aspiring scientists competed under different categories including Biomedical and Medical Sciences, Computer Science and Software Development, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Engineering, Energy, Environmental Studies, Physics, Astronomy and Space Sciences, Plant Sciences, Environmental Sciences and Agricultural Sciences.
All finalists will be awarded with certificates, and winners from the Zimbabwe Science Fair will also be awarded with a wide range of prizes that include cash, technology, educational trips and programmatic scholarships. Some of the awards include The Community Innovation Award, Association for Women Geoscientists Award, Grand Awards , South African Youth Engineering and Science Symposium (SAYESS) Finalist Award, Society for In Vitro Biology Award and Yale Science & Engineering Association Award. Most importantly, some of the winners will continue to a retreat in Nyanga and prepare to attend the world’s biggest pre-university science competition, Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) to be held in Dallas, Texas, from May 13-19, 2023.
The Zimbabwe Science Fair was established in 2014 by Mr. Knowledge Chikundi and will celebrate its tenth anniversary next year. The first Science Fair was held on the 28th of January the following year at Queen Elizabeth High School in Harare being officiated by the former Minister of Education Dr Lazarus Dokora. Although the first Science Fair was a small event in 2014, it has grown to attract thousands of entries over the years.
