Zimbabwean Guidance and College Counselors Program: Education USA and Education Matters Partnership

In partnership with EducationUSA Zimbabwe, we launched the Professional College and Career Guidance Counseling Program in ate September of 2021. The program is facilitated by Kim Lloyd Rodriguez and is a hybrid online/in-person program delivered over 6 months. This program is an opportunity for Zimbabwean high school career and guidance counselors to build their knowledge and skills in order to strengthen the university and career counseling programs at their schools, as well as build professional networks in the field.

Over the last few months counselors have had informative training sessions covering application processes, timelines, scholarship opportunities, and how to best support students with their journey into higher education. Counselors also benefitted from webinars featuring presentations from recent university graduates covering relevant information on their undergraduate universities and experiences, as well as a separate session on sports scholarship opportunities.

To further support guidance counselors in the program, and other counselors, we have also published a monthly newsletter focused on topics related to student application support. Topics have included understanding the different application deadlines, the Common Application process, and college interviews. The monthly newsletter has also featured various scholarship and program opportunities, universities, and Zimbabwean student spotlights.

This month’s newsletter includes information on how students can respond to a university deferral and how guidance counsellors can support them in that process, including tips on writing a letter of continued interest.
